What is IPTV EPG and How to Fix it When it’s Missing?
One of the best features of modern IPTV is the ability to browse channels just like you would on a traditional cable box. However, occasionally, you might open your app and find that your TV Guide is completely blank, displaying messages like “No Information” or “No EPG Data”.
In this guide, we will explain exactly what an EPG is, why it disappears, and how you can fix it on your favorite IPTV apps.
What is an EPG?
EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide. It is the digital menu that shows you what TV shows, movies, or sporting events are currently playing on a specific channel, as well as what is scheduled to play next.
When you purchase an IPTV subscription, you are generally provided with two pieces of data:
- The Playlist: The actual video streams (channels and VODs).
- The EPG Source: An XML file (often called an XMLTV link) that contains the schedule text data.
Note: If you use the XTREAM Codes API login method (Username, Password, and Server URL), your EPG data is automatically pulled from the server along with the playlist. This is why we always recommend XTREAM over standard M3U links.
Why is My EPG Missing? (The 3 Main Causes)
If your channels are playing perfectly fine, but the guide is blank, it is usually due to one of three reasons:
1. The App Failed to Update
EPG data is massive. Because TV schedules change daily, your app needs to download the new schedule from the server regularly. If your device was turned off, or if your internet briefly dropped during the scheduled update, the app will show blank data.
2. Timezone Desync (Time Shift)
The EPG data file provides times in a universal format (UTC). Your IPTV app then calculates the time difference based on your device’s internal clock. If your Firestick or Android Box has the wrong timezone or daylight savings setting, the guide will show the wrong shows playing at the wrong times.
3. Server-Side Maintenance
Occasionally, the IPTV provider’s EPG server goes down for maintenance. When this happens, no data can be downloaded. This is usually temporary and resolves itself within a few hours.
How to Fix a Missing EPG
Here is how you can force your app to fetch the latest TV Guide data.
Fix 1: Force Update in IPTV Smarters Pro
IPTV Smarters is notorious for failing to update the EPG automatically if you leave the app running in the background.
- Open the app and go to the main dashboard.
- Click on the Settings icon (the gear in the top right corner).
- Select EPG Time Shift (Ensure this is set to ‘0’ unless all your shows are exactly 1 hour off).
- Go back to Settings and click EPG Sources.
- Click the Refresh button next to your EPG source to force a manual download.
Fix 2: Clear and Update in TiviMate
TiviMate handles EPG data better than almost any other app, but it can still get stuck.
- While watching TV, hold the ‘Left’ or ‘Back’ button to bring up the left-hand menu.
- Go to Settings > EPG.
- Scroll down and click Clear EPG (This deletes the corrupted data).
- Click Update EPG. A notification at the bottom of the screen will show the download progress.
Fix 3: Check Your Device’s Time and Date
If your guide data is showing up, but it says the morning news is playing at 11:00 PM at night, you have a timezone issue.
- Exit your IPTV app and go to your device’s main settings (e.g., Firestick Settings).
- Go to Preferences > Time Zone.
- Ensure the timezone matches your actual physical location.
- Restart your IPTV app and refresh the EPG.
